Courses Tailored to Minds That Want More
My teaching is designed for individuals who enjoy depth
and want to connect with German beyond textbooks and
travel tips. Whether you’re just beginning or already able to
read Thomas Mann (or would like to), we’ll find the
right place to start!
You can choose between private sessions and small group classes (up to 5 participants). All sessions are live, online (via Microsoft Teams et al.) and conducted in German, with occasional English support when helpful.

Speak Freely, Think Deeply, Connect Culturally

➤ General German (A1–B2)
Whether you're new to German or want to refresh your skills,
I offer general courses focusing on:
- Everyday conversation
- Grammar foundations
- Listening and speaking practice
- Reading short texts with confidence
- Cultural context for real-world use
We’ll often work with a textbook (loosely), but always integrate authentic materials, humor, and practical language.
➤ German Through Literature
Explore the German language through the words of its greatest authors – and those who inspire them.
Depending on your level, we may read (for example):
- Classic authors (Goethe, Eichendorff, Kafka)
- Modern voices (Sebald, Dürrenmatt, Schlink)
- World literature in German translation (e.g., Shakespeare, Homer, Tolstoi)
Sessions include reading, interpretation, vocabulary work, and open discussion. Perfect for those who want to read deeply and think freely – in German.
➤ German Through Philosophy
Are synthetic a priori judgments possible? Let’s find out – in German.
This course is designed for learners who wish to
engage in philosophical thinking while improving their language.
Depending on your interests and level, we can explore (again, for example):
- German philosophers: Kant, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Arendt
- Key ideas in translation: Plato, Descartes, Hume
- Contemporary debates in ethics, epistemology, or political theory
No prior background in philosophy is needed (but helpful) –
just curiosity and a willingness to think.
➤ German Through History
From the Thirty Years' War to the fall of the Berlin Wall: German history is rich,
complex, and essential to understanding the language and culture.
In this course, we might explore:
- Key historical events and figures
- How the German language reflects its history
- Reading and interpreting historical texts
- Engaging in thoughtful discussion and analysis
Ideal for advanced learners, but also adaptable for intermediate students with a strong interest.
➤ Colloquial German, Phrases and idioms
You get (most of) what you read in German textbooks, but have difficulties
understanding German everyday lingo? This is the course for you!
- Where and when Germans abbreviate their language
- How to understand your German neighbour's mumblings
- How to engage in an actual conversation with Germans – street level!
Ideal for advanced learners, but also adaptable for intermediate students with a strong interest.
